Busking: Bringing colour and vibrancy to Liechhardt

Busking is a wonderful expression of creativity that can be enjoyed by anyone walking past, bringing joy to the public and helping people get their skills out in the open. These performances are supported by the Leichhardt Council, which could be great news for those interested in purchasing property in Sydney's Inner West suburbs

What is Busking?

Busking has been defined by the Leichhardt Council as public performances that contribute to the colour, vibrancy and liveliness of public spaces and main street areas. People like musicians, comedians, jugglers, clowns, dancers, contortionists, living statues, puppeteers and many more are all considered to be buskers by the local council.

However, it's necessary for performers to get a busking licence from the local government beforehand. These can be obtained from the Liechhardt Council by completing a Busking Permit Application Form and Agreement and providing a passport sized photo.

These are valid for 12 months and cost a $30 fee, which is not transferable or refundable. However, there are 6-month options available for $20 as well. These documents must be displayed at all times during the performance in order to avoid any complications or potential fines.

Furthermore, buskers under the age of 12 are exempt from all charges and have no need for a licence of any sort when performing on the streets of Liechhardt. Busking of any sort is permitted between 8 am and 10 pm everyday of the week. However, buskers are only allowed to perform for a maximum of two hours at any one location, which keeps performances fresh and vibrant.

Where is busking encouraged?

There are three locations across the Liechhardt local council area that can be used for busking. Loyalty Square on Darling Street, Balmain, Orange Grove Plaza on Balmain Road, Lilyfield and Rozelle Square on  Darling Street, Rozelle. These are public areas that are often frequented by large groups of people, making them the perfect places for performing.
