Sydney named top worldwide destination for international university students

Sydney has become the world's most popular city for students to study in, with more international students stating they want gain education in the New South Wales capital than anywhere else. This could be great news for those interested in purchasing investment properties in the Inner West suburbs, especially for renting out to tertiary students.

Global consulting firm AT Kearney placed Sydney ahead of 83 other cities as a preferred city for studying, after investigating the size of the international student population across the city. Surprisingly, Sydney even beat London and New York in this year's Global Cities Index for international students. The results found the city hosts 50,000 visiting students, with another 50,000 studying vocational and English courses.

Sydney has a reputation for being culturally diverse, as well as hugely social and economically successful - which Lord Mayor Clover Moore said gave the city strong ties to the rest of the world.

"Our community of international students improves the city's prosperity and liveability. Being the world's most popular destination for international students helps build Sydney's cultural diversity and strengthen our regional and global connections," said Cr Moore in an April 28 statement.

The international student community creates a demand for the equivalent of 10,000 full time jobs across the city, as well as generating over $1.6 billion towards Sydney's economy. These benefits could be great for the growing Balmain community and surrounding Sydney area. With the University of Sydney located south of the region, there are a wide range of public transport options available for students to commute to and from classes, part-time employment and social gatherings.

"To be a competitive global city, we need a strong education and research sector. Sydney offers first-class education, professional experiences, cutting-edge research opportunities, a strong economy and a lifestyle that is unmatched. It is no wonder so many students choose to live here," said Cr Moore.
