Prepare your home for autumn: Making your home comfortable during the cooler months

With autumn just around the corner, the seasonal changes will be plentiful across Sydney's Inner West suburbs. Not only will the trees begin to turn into a kaleidoscope of yellow, maroon and orange, but the weather will start to shift away from the beating heat of summer into cooler breezes - complete with the mid-year drop in temperatures.

Now could be the perfect time to give consideration towards your home and start preparing your own little slice of Balmain real estate for the seasonal changes expected over the coming months.

Prepping your gutters

While the falling leaves can make your backyard look picturesque, they can also wreck havoc on your home if the proper precautions aren't taken. Leafy residue has the potential to get caught in your drains and piping, causing blockages that can make your life extremely difficult - especially if you have to clear it multiple times a week.

An inexpensive solution for this could be the installation of grating over the exposed drainage on your roof. This will keep the leaves out of the drain while still allowing water to run into the piping and save you from the hassle of regular clearing.

Installing insulation

Another way to help prepare your home for the cooler months ahead is to install insulation in the walls, roof and floors of your home. This extra layer of padding between yourself and the outside will help to regulate the temperature inside.

This means keeping the warmth in during the winter while helping to keep the heat out during the warmer summer months. When coupled with another source of heat - like a fireplace or heat pump - you'll find yourself feeling warm and toasty through the coming autumn and winter.
